Steve Cropper: “Knock on Wood”

The remarkable guitarist Steve Cropper—who died this week—co-wrote “Dock of the Bay” with Otis Redding, “Midnight Hour” with Wilson Pickett and “Knock On Wood” with Eddie Floyd. Here is a recent version of the latter with Cropper on guitar.

Steve Cropper was also the guitar player on Sam and Dave’s “Soul Man” and “Hold On I’m Coming,” Otis Redding’s “Try a Little Tenderness” and “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” Wilson Pickett’s “634-5789” (which he also co-wrote), the Staple Singers’ “I’ll Take You There” and “Respect Yourself,” and, of course, Booker T. and the M.G.’s “Green Onions” and “Time is Tight.”
