Writing About Our Generation

Where Else Could we live?

  • For the chart Christina Hepner Brodie prepared on what would be involved, given the current political situation in the United States, in moving to another country, click here.

Here is the introduction to the chart she prepared for a group in Falmouth, Massachusetts:

"We LOVE living in our community; we've invested significantly in building the community of which we have become an integral part. However, I also invested time and resources in this past Presidential election and was left feeling impotent by the results. I do NOT like feeling powerless. Since we live in something of a bubble, based on local and state politics, we like to think we will be insulated from the impact. Recent leadership appointments evoke a fear of the worst unfolding--perhaps bursting our bubble, and motivated me to create a map of options so that we have something of a back-up plan for leaving.

“Since my husband is still working, we would start by staying a couple of months next winter in Mexico (time zones are less of a factor than Europe for his work) --where we have spent time, to see how we react to that locale for longer than two weeks.

“If that doesn't suit us, perhaps by then, he will retire, we'll sell our home, buy a smaller place locally so we could return if we choose to, and then try another country for a few months the following year. I used to be willing to 'take to the streets' (Women's March in Washington after Trump's first election), but at my age, my intent is to leave that to the younger generation, to live without daily anxiety and continue to live fully as long as I am able.

“My chart is fairly superficial, but I learned in the process that even with a simple overview, one can narrow down which countries are appealing and dive deeper into the one or two that seem optimal."
