What’s next
Now that the raging has subsided a bit…what’s next?
Forty friends and I hosted a Vermont Women’s Rally a few days before the election. We had Taiko Drummers, U.S. senators, musicians and inspiring speakers. Two thousand people showed up at our Vermont Statehouse on a chilly Nov. 2 day to come together in solidarity around all the issues that we knew would be pulverized if Vice President Harris lost.
And pulverized they will be. We can expect a national abortion ban, the end to Title X funding, trans rights obliterated and, well, you know the rest. We can expect a domino effect—as one human right tumbles it will hit another and another and one by one, they will fall under the crushing weight of MAGA, creating a road of devastation that will manifest in suffering, loss and pain for many.
Our country will be transformed by grifters and oligarchs whose hearts and minds are cruel and vengeful.
Yet we did everything possible to defeat Trump. Our teams across the country wrote postcards until their fingers bled, knocked on doors until their knuckles buckled, made phone calls until their minds went numb.
We got out the vote, but we still lost.
The reasons being peddled are many, but for me, I believe that the Trump voters simply have been duped. Quite honestly, the next few years will bring many of the millions of red-hatted Trumpers to their senses. They will realize the error of their trust because they will feel the suffering in their own lives. They will develop a sickness called “voter's regret.”
But enough about them. What can we do? Some ideas:
Join a local Indivisible chapter and get involved in the “Worth Fighting For” campaign. It’s a post-election community gathering guide.
Bring people together in your home and strategize your next steps. How do we organize under authoritarianism and how do we protect those who are most vulnerable to the ravishes of MAGA?
I do not want to get all fuzzy and delusional about any of this. The truth is I’m in the mood to break some glass and walk on it barefoot. But care and comfort, hope and vision, are the things that our friends and family need right now. This is what our country needs.
So, let us create the space over these few months to regain our power and self-confidence. And during the next four years let us build ourselves into a Resistance that can stomp out the MAGA Movement once and for all.
We must re-shape our country into a future of inclusion, economic equality, tolerance, justice and unification. We can do this by showing up and not giving up.
